If I was trying to buy a 20hz to 20khz tone generator, audio signal generator or function generator. Just something to put out a constant sine wave tone (because I don't want any noisy harmonics). Where could I find something like this cheaply? I've seen very expensive versions of this but I don't want to spend more than $150, is this possible please?

Since you appear to have a computer, might I suggest using your sound card?
There probably is a shareware or freeware program out there that will generate the range of tones you want, and most sound cards can produce that range fairly cleanly. (Assuming you do not mind a 44,100 Hz, overtone which is mostly filtered out anyway.)(44,100 Hz. is the CD quality sampling rate. It is hypersonic and inaudible)(Some sound cards can produce a 48,000 and maybe 96,000 Hz. sample rate.)

You have an expensive problem. You want to suppress harmonics and that in and of itself is expensive. You might find something on the government surplus market that would do, but forget Radio Shack and the other junk shops. You could build your own. Pure sine waves are hard to come by.

Check this item on eBay. It uses the computer sound card, does what you are asking, and much more.
