I have a 9 year old russian blue who I am very close to. He is very attatched to me and me to him. I recently started working more and so I decided to get a new kitten as it would keep him company and I thought It would be nice to have a new cat. The kitten has adjusted well but my older cat (Scattie) is very upset. he has been out all day which is unusual he growls and hisses at the kitten all the time. he wont sleep on my bed with me and he always wants to go outside. These are all very unusual behaviours. I'm very worried that he will run away. does anyone have any ideas on how to make this easier on him? Please help

As you already now your cat is very jealous and a bit upset with you. Pay more attention to Scattie then the kitten. Never make a fuss over the kitten when he's in the room with you, ignore the kitten in a sense. It sounds mean, but it can work. I've been there many, many times. We just added a now 5 month old kitten my son got from a dumpster and that how we did it. We let the older cats (youngest 2 are 4 1/2 yrs., oldest will be 12yr. Feb.) come to the kitten and we would tell them its a baby over and over. We talk to our animals just like we would our own kids. We started the "baby" saying when we introduced a goat to our wolf mix over 8 yrs ago. She seemed to get it and now we let them run in the pen together. I too am concerned about your cat running away or even being stolen. This can and does happen. I've had it happen too. Consider using an inclosure to put him into while outside. Chances are if he thinks you love him more then the kitten, he'll accept it quicker. Some people put the newcomer in a bedroom or bathroom with a tall gate up and let the older cat come over, they do get curious. Talk to him like you normally do and explain he's a baby and you need his help in watching the baby. This is how we got my older wolf mix to accept a spaniel mix puppy, we asked her to help us look after the puppy. I told her he needed a home and she needed to watch out for him with us and guard him so no harm came to him. It worked too well, she growled at my husbands friend and former boss when he came on the porch. Our door was open and the porch door was closed. In all her seven years (now 11) she'd never growled at anyone before. She was protecting her "baby". Good luck and consider even keeping Scattie in doors for his own safety. I had a Turkish Angora that someone fed anti-freeze to because they didn't like my cats or me. I was new to state and she didn't like where I was from. I know who did it, but couldn't prove it. I legally took her 2 cats after I found she abused them. She's moved now and my cats are healthy.

i became in this very similar concern for 2 years. ultimately I were given a kitten for my youthful cat. It became the perfect bypass i'd have made. i recognize your husband reported no way yet possibly if he hears from some different person what a benefit it really is, he will supply it a 2d idea. i have got here upon that I do more desirable with 2 cats than 3 yet i can not supply up any of my little ones. The oldest is 15 a million/2. the way I see it, i respect her dearly yet in below 5 years i'd be decrease back to 2 cats and would loosen up somewhat. That sounds merciless yet i do not propose it that way. basically be counted of truth. So having the project of three is nicely worth it for me for decades to convey solidarity to my domicile.

Its normal for a cat expecially an older aged cat, to do that. I live with a friend and I have a cat. My friend got a kitten over the summer and my cat went into hiding. He eventually got used to the kitten and now they play together. It takes some time for a cat to get used to another animal.

Your nine year old is being territorial because it is the alpha leader in your home. It may take some time but he will warm up more to the new kitten. I went through the same exact thing and after a month or so they chilled out. Keep them inside until they bond. Make them eat out of the same dishes to get them to be close.

take both the cats out for walks together
then play ball with them both and cuddle both of them by holding them together
feed them from the same plate
do everything concerning them together...even bathing them
this will make your older cat feel that she is respected as much as the new kitten and help her get over the jealousy..

they might get used to eachother, but when i got a new kitten (Pirate), my other cat (Kiki, 7 yrs old) always hated him, even when Pirate tried to play with her and just wanted to be friends.

but then again, Kiki is a very cranky kitty.
