it's not about what represents family to me or anybody else. if you want to get a tattoo to represent your family then you should think about what family means to you. what object or event reminds you of family? i got a tattoo that represents family to me. it's a korean takeout box with a fortune cookie. not really something that immediately brings "family" to mind for most.

What does your family mean to you? Continuity? Companionship? History? Support? Life-giving? So what you choose to represent family will depend upon how exactly you see family.
You could, for example, symbolise each member of your immediate family as a petal in a stylised flower. Or you could symbolise each member of your family, and put those symbols together so that they make a little picture. That might even be as simple as having a star for each member, and having the stars making up the Southern Cross, or perhaps your own astrological sign. Or, you could have a Celtic knot design, where each line represents a member of your family, the lines interlink, as do family members, and the design is greater than the sum of its parts. (These are just ideas to get you thinking, in the end, you have to make the choice.)
The only thing I'd be a bit wary of is: are you getting a tattoo to represent your family because your family is really terrific, or are you hoping that your family will become really terrific if you make such a permanent statement that they ought to be? (I'm sorry to bring this up, but my experience of families hasn't been all that positive. I spent 10 years growing up in a family that was a pretence of the happy, middle class family, but which was, in reality, bitterly unhappy.)

Glad to see someone Actually thinking before getting a tattoo. I felt the same way as you before getting my tattoos. I'm Scottish and Irish so I got my clan badge tattooed to represent my family name and a 4 leaf clover to represent Ireland. Look your last name up and see if there's any art that represents it that appeals to you.

Perhaps a family crest? Or you could design a monogram that represents your family. Hope that helps. :)

All tattoos represent family to me, in that they are unnecessary and painful, but everybody still thinks they're cool. Just don't get that lame tribal doodle stuff on your arm.
how 'bout a big double helix?
