I've found that the Granny Smith apple is a little tart for my taste. What's the best or sweetest apple to snack on? I won't be making any apple pies with them, just eating them plain...

Prefer Red Delicious from Washington. Or if you can find one a Fuji Apple that's both sweet and crisp. But the Fujis are not nearly as good as they used to be 5 or 10 years ago.

Love your question, right down my alley!

These are the klind of apples I recommend when in season for some varieties.
Fuji apples, number 1, for me, honey-melon apples when in season also delicious, Braeburns (New Zealand's imports)
acceptable, Jonagold, maybe, but you must try a sample, if you
can, red delicious samll or large, can be delicious, if they are not
from a long term storage warehouse, awaiting shipment to the retailer, what happens is the apple's flesh gets spongy inside,
and affects the taste and firmness.
Of course, during the off season of some apple varieties, the
growers store these apples, awaiting futher shipment to the retailers, and that process determines the sponginess of the apples.
Rome apples can be good, also peppin apples can be eaten
as is, although like granny smith apples this variety is used for
cooking and baking rather than eat as is apple.
Gala apples is another variety, although they may be too granular
for the average apple consumer, depends on your tastes.
The Washington winesap (when in season) has one lf the most
inviting flavors for an apple, its flesh is usually firm, not too sweet,
and when you bite into the apple for the first time, you can hear the desired crunch or crack of breaking the seal of the apple,
and begin to taste the flesh and the juice pouring from its opening.
If it don't do those properties, its too ripe, or there is something else wrong with it.
I have ate them for years, when I can get hold of the genuine
apple, and they are in season, great snack food item.

For every day snacking, I always go for the Fuji, the Japanese
have managed to produce a hybrid of two different apple
varieties, and come up with an apple that has excellent flavor,
firm of flesh, and not too sweet, but just right, and thats why
its my favorite apple.

Now, we must remember there are many varieties of apples
available throughout the United States, as Johnny Appleseed covered the entire continent with apples, legend holds, I don't
know if I believe that or not, maybe there is little truth to it, anyway, anywhere you go there will be different names of apples
sold on the display stands of the supermarkets, its up to you to
try samples of each, to determine what you like best.

Thats my message, good luck.

I'm with you. Granny Smith are ok, but are tart for my taste. That's why they are best for baking, since you add sugar and Cinnamon and other sweeteners.

But, my fave, as I noticed others have mentioned is Gala and Fuji's. I like those. Red Delicious and Macintosh are good, but too hard for my teeth to bite down on.

I tried and saw something called a "Grapeple" or was it spelled "Grapple?" (Pronounced Grape-Ple). Apples that has a (purple) Grape (juice), aroma to it. It did smell strongly of grape juice. I bought it, but didn't really taste the grape when I ate it. I never bought it again. It was way over-priced than regular apples.

Wondering, McIntosh are nice. they're not too tart. I use to love the Granny Smith apples, but after tasting McIntosh I won't go back! You're right, the Granny Smith apples are too tart.

Golden Delicious... or try a Pink Lady.

Granny Smiths are usually for baking (all that sugar) and desserts!

Do you have a farmers market? It's apple season, I would recommend venturing out and trying the just picked varieties there, versus the engineered to last ones from the supermarket.
