The area around the school is old and a little run down, but downtown Chico is real nice and Bidwell Park is really beautiful. I live in the dorms and really don't think it is any more of a party school than other university. I would say about half of the people in my dorm are from the LA/OC area. The professors are good are really care about their students. I was asking myself the same questions about CSU Chico last year and have never regretted my decision about going there.

go to one of the UC schools instead if at all possible - you'll get a better education. you might want to go to chico for a while and then transfer if you can't get in right away but there are generally a limited number of transfer slots. it can sometimes be harder to get in that way.
