Take a water bottle, people tend to get dehydrated during air travel. The flight attendants will provide you with you water but its easier to have your own. Not sure if it has to be sealed or not, with the changing security regulations maybe best to be safe and keep it unopened.
If you have ever seen or know what a a neck pillow is, get one, they are great for long flights and car trips. They look a bit funny but there is nothing funny about a crimped neck and a headache from it.
Wear shoes that are comfortable and if you get cold easily, warm socks. You may want to take your shoes off and it gets cold on an airplane floor.
Some sort of personal audio even if you don't use one to often, I didn't use one much until I flew from Colorado to Germany and back several times. A book is also a winner if you like to read.
Think of things that are lightweight and easy to pack. You don't want to be lugging around to much while you are trying to find your gate and your seat and then get off the plane when you land.

If you are changing planes somewhere it is a great idea to pack your toiletries, a change of clothes and anything else you have to have right away in your carry on. I learned that lesson the hard way, I landed 9 hrs before my luggage, good thing my sister is my same size. Also wear all your valuables, don't even risk them in your carry on, you can keep them concealed beneath your clothes and its worth the peace of mind to know where they are all the time.

Lotion

Gum

Flip flops - if not already wearing comfy shoes

Any necessary medications for at least 3 days

Toothbrush

Washcloth - a cloth one or some really strong paper towels or something like that

A spare t-shirt - you'll want to change your top before you land

If bringing a laptop, bring a power adaptor - IMHO a laptop is better than an iPod because you can use a power outlet if the plane has them in the seats and you can watch movies, listen to music, etc. without worrying about the battery dying. Call the airline about power adaptors.

A few snacks - on our flight to/from London there were snacks and meals served, but I got the munchies and didn't want to bug the flight attendants.

A bottle of water

If you bring books or magazines, bring things you won't mind leaving or tossing - you'll be bringing a lot of stuff back from your trip I hope :) If you bring a laptop you can download books to it before you leave home :)

A notepad to jot down things...

A pillow - a cheap throw pillow will help on a long trip for your back or head and can squeeze into a bag.

Have fun!

I have done the Sydney to LA flight about a dozen times. I don't envy you! :-))

I would bring an MP3 Player/IPOD, or portable DVD player (unless you are on an airlines that has video on demand, then you really won't need it). Reading material, game books (even easy ones like word searches can help pass the time-and you can pitch them when you land). Some people bring laptops - I think they are too much of a hassle to get through security.
Also, bring some snacks. I always bring some chocolate or hard candy. I also recommend a pair of warm fuzzy non-slip socks to change into when you want to sleep.
Some airlines give you a toiletries bag (some don't, so ask ahead of time). I always bring a toothbrush/toothpaste, comb, and deodorant. Just check airline regulations for the latest on what can and can't be taken onto the planes.
Lastly, bring a sweater. The airline blankets are not always the warmest!

Have fun!!

not more than the strict necessary. nowadays air travel is strictly controlled and I would not advise that you pack a lot of stuff which you have to unpack in front of the security personnel for board check ups. so again, the strict minimum will do. toot brush, paste (tiny versions), if you are a young woman toiletries, no cans, no sharp edged instruments --have a second and third look at your small bag and eliminate all unnecessary stuff. include medicine to last the 13 hrs. trip. bon voyage. include identification card and phone numbers.

To pack:

language pack if visiting a foreign country (phrase book, audio, etc)
Info on the city - familiarise yourself with the layout, shopping opportunities, etc
puzzle book, like Sudoku
light fiction book (nothing too heavy)
neck pillow for comfort
magazine or two
your favourite snacks

I find the more variety the better to ward off the boredom.

pack lightly. On flights that long there are usually movies to watch, games to play and things to read. My first two long flights I brought all kinds of things to do and didn't touch them either time. No sense in lugging stuff around you won't touch. Wet wipes are great to have as are hard candies (I have no idea why but I always want them when I'm flying) and maybe some assorted tummy medicines: tums, imodium etc. Don't forget a pen for filling out customs forms

an extra pair of underwear, socks and a shirt, hygenic items like toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, and a washcloth and sanitizer or something along with a good book, water, maybe some fruit like an apple or pear, a hair brush, some lotion and cover-up (if they still allow them on the planes) and whatever else you think you might need to amuse yourself.

Bring some snacks and some reading material. It's a good chance to catch up on those books you never have time to read.
