i hate crunches.
another alternative is to...
1) watch your posuture - how you sit on a couch, at work, etc.
2) keep the abs tight at all times whether sitting or standing
3) jog or run and suck in your abs as you run - still breath but keep the abs tight.
4) eat 5 small meals a day instead of 3. Don't let your sagging guts make you think you are fat if you are just 'loose' in that area

Take it slowly first. For the past three months, I have gone to the gym to work out for about two hours a day, four days a week and everything was fine. This has been happening for only about a week now, and the pain is pretty much gone. But I just wanted to let you know that the safest, best way to get nice looking abs is to pace your ab workouts. Do slow reps of 20- 50 crunchs on a map and on an excercising ball several times a week. Let your body rest in between workout days and in between reps. To work out your lower abs, do crunches with your legs together, up in the air. Or try hanging onto a high bar and lifting your legs straight out, so that they are perpendicular to your body. Good luck and be careful to listen to when your body says "no more."

"Crunches" is too generic. It only works if it's done correctly and especially *slowly*. Plus, it only works SOME abs, not all.
You also need to do:
1) sit-ups
2) leg pull-ins
3) bicycle exercises
4) exercise ball crunches
5) reverse crunches
etc etc etc
