I am a believer in one language many diversities. I was looking for positive comments on the subject of the American language being english only. Infact I think we should break away from english and call our language AMERICAN! Thank you.

It seems like the Spanish speaking people are trying to make a second language so they don't have to learn English. That way their it makes it easier for ilegals to migrate here. If you go to any other country and don't learn the language, They will refuse your welcome. They for sure are not going to go to the tax payers expence to draw up special Government forms for English. Don't tell me thats what makes the United States special. It makes the United States full of undocumented people sending our U.S. dollars to another country. Besides the possibility of taking Government control ..

"press 1 for English" is largely an American BUSINESS practice. In this case it has nothing to do with any "official" or governmental policy, and everything to do with what the businesses involved believe to be in their own best interest. If you, as a business owner, have (or want to have) many clients who do not speak English or who have enough difficulty understanding the English needed for transacting buisness with you, rather than provide a lot of headaches for your client service people or losing business, you may well decide to provide some services in another language (esp. Spanish).
Now when government agencies do the same sort of thing it is not all that different. Making sure the people who call understand well enough to do the right thing (e.g., paying taxes!) is worth it.
As for those who think it is some kind of major inconvenience to have to press one button to get immediate service in English, consider the alternatives. IF the business or agency is going to provide any NON-English services they really have to provide some place for non-English speakers to register that need/request. Do you want them to wait till the END of a long spiel before they default to English? Or do you want to get it all out of the way in a fraction of a second and not have to listen to extraneous info about other languages?!
Finally, on your suggestion of "American" I absolutely disagree. The "American" language may have dialectal differences from British English, etc., but they are still one language. "English" is simply an historical marker of the history of the language. (And the English have no more claim to it than Americans... for that matter, there are numerous examples of British English CHANGES where American dialects have NOT changed [from the 17th-18th century English of the first settlers that is])
If we call it "American" what are we to call the main language of Mexico and Central and South America? See, they are not so different from us -- they speak dialects of SPANISH, even though they live outside of Spain. Again, the language name indicates the origin, not the country people currently reside in.

as the above has said, If an american went to another country we woul dhave to learn some basic words of their language. Immigrants from mexico do have to take classes, and so on, therefore, there shouldnt be any pressing one or two they should know. and as far as the ' their money is as good as ours? Well sure, but if they come here they had better learn to speak english. Im one for free speech and so on, I dont care if they speak amoung their buddies in spanish, but why should we have to pick and choose. America is diverse great, but that doesnt mean being seperate is a crime. I am a separatist and a White Nationalist.

America does not have an "official" language. A large portion of the population speak Spanish so it makes sense.

In canada it's widely known and widely publicized they are "bilingual" and that their two official languages are english and french.
I don't know when a second "official" language for the United States was announced (I didn't hear about it) and I don't know who decided the second language would be spanish. I guess I missed that big announcement too.
What gets me are the signs (street signs, advertising, signs at airports, etc) in spanish. Why!

Yes, OK, but you see that 'American' English and real original English have vast differences. I can refer you to the jokes on Aha! Jokes.com Ethnic Jokes to show how vastly different everyone considers 'American' English and the original one.
Oh, just by the way, you're welcome.
