Too broad of a question. If your going to spend less than $400 , the Canon A640, excellent picture quality. If your going for an SLR any Nikon, Canon, Olympus or Pantax camera will do. I mostly like only Nikons and Canons. I own a film Nikon and a digital Canon Rebel.

Nikon and Canon get one of their cameras both have excellent picture quality and durablity.

After reading though this:

http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-6501_7-0.html?filter=1000036_5245817_&tag=dffl3_1

I purchased the Canon PowerShot A630 ...it's actually gone up in price since December. No complains yet. Remember that you don't necessarily need a huge amount of megapixels unless you're going to blow a picture up past a 10.5x11, so look for ease of use, how quick it is to take pictures, storage, battery life, options, etc.

It all depends on how much money you want to spend, when you want to do with the camera and what your prior experience is.

Either "Add Details" and tell us or (better) post a new question.

Without this information, you will get all kinds of useless advice.

Digital or film? I"ll assume digital, if you want film you would probably know.

If you ae looking for HIGH end digital, pretty much any Canon model that begins with EOS is good. like the 20D or 5D.Your talking in the thousands of dollars. If your looking for something "good" but not "pro" something like the S3 IS is good.. I have it and like it. If your looking for simple and easy and compact.. . maybe the SD800 would do the trick. that one is quite new.
