It's usually a place to hold temporarily installation files. Technically, it's worthless, but some programs will use some residue files if you decide to update the program or use some feature that would require it.

I would recommend to you that you leave the files there alone. Besides, it can't be taking up THAT much memory on your hard drive.

Yes, they are temporary. Many programs leave behind files when being installed or when run. Unfortunately, they build up pretty quickly, so it is a good idea to clean these out once in a while. It can be hard to know if you will need them again (usually when uninstalling or modifying programs).

PS - It can take up some hard drive space on your computer as there is one of these for each user and also one in the Windows folder.

It's history, all right. Whenever you install an application, or use certain applications, this is the space it uses to store the temporary files.

Yes, you are correct, the files are not conducive to optimized performance. The folder can balloon in size, with files of various types and sizes collecting over time.

There is no harm in occasionally emptying the folder based on usage. *Do not empty your temp folder during an installation, or when running applications.*

Same thing as a "temp worker" for hire, it is temporary. It is for temporary storage of files you do not want to keep on your hard drive or other storage media.

You don't need to delete the folder, rather use it, and then delete the obsolete files from time to time to clean up and free up your storage media space.

Feel free to delete them. They are just used temporarily by OS and applications.

Yes you can delete them, I do all the time. They're just little bits of info or documents you've downloaded that you don't actually need.
