Hi,

I'd like to know why the majority of Abrahamic religion followers deny their mysticism?

Seriously, a lot of Christians dislike Gnosticism, Jews and Kabbalah, and Muslims with Sufism.

Why?

No, they don't admit to it.

There are many people who practice Sufism. Look at how popular Rumi is (best selling poet in the US). In the past many Muslims affiliated themselves with Sufism first and then whatever type of Muslim they were second. However I think that I understand what you are asking: Why does Mysticism engender such a passionate disavowal by those who do not follow it? Am I right? If so, I think it is because Mysticism is very sense oriented, and because of that it is a challenge to orthodoxy.

Since I'm an eastern Mediterranean for the past 10,000 years and have lived in the middle east for 17 years I can assure you that there is plenty of mysticism in the area. A dime a dozen. and not just Sufis or dervishes but a plethora of little groups experiencing the god thing in their own particular way. After all The three major religious doctrines of the west were born in the Middle East. Jehovah Christianity and Islam. It all started HERE. There are countless of hermits still around representing all the doctrines. Monasteries dedicated to meditation and revelation. You have no Idea.

Mysticism is a part of all religions. But Sufis more commit themselves to extreme mysticism, forgetting that part of their religious texts tell them that they also have duties here on earth. Religion should define a way of life- not only a trend of thought. It should govern the way you eat, treat other people, behave and every other aspect of life, not only "direct worhipping". You know the funny thing about human nature? Man would actually argue with an angel for being too perfect. Man always deny things that are better for him, and go about to picking and choosing whatever pleases them most. Ironically, you have people that meditate a lot- but many are benign to some of the most imperative thoughts they should actually entertain.

Actually, until recently (the last 100 years) the majority of Muslims had Sufi affiliation. Perhaps the failure of Sufism to explain the colonial experience and the appeal of modern secular ideas are reasons that is no longer the case.
