You'd have to contact your local social services office. Aid is available like cash aid, food stamps and medical. Unfortunately, they are not likely to pay your rent unless you get Section 8 and there is a major waiting list for that.

Not likely. Homes in the bay are rather expensive and most housing aid is already established into section 8 areas...meaning you have to live in a certain place in order to obtain that type of aid. Those places are usually run down, badly managed and over-priced. Your best bet is to just get something you can afford unless you are willing to put up with a few room mates.
