First of all you need to be organized, paperwork should be organized by the month. Second of all, you should pay your local bookstore a visit and purchase some books that deal with taxes or accounting. The "Dummies" book series is pretty good and easy to understand. You don't want to go out and spend alot of money on a "professional" to tell you how to get your s**t together.

You have already recognized that you need professional help. There are a lot of people who are available to help you. You can go into one of the chain preparation firms and speak to someone, no charge. If you find a preparer who you are confident can do a good job for you, that may be all you need to do.

If the mass-market tax preparation firms are not meeting your needs, you may need to go to a CPA or Enrolled Agent. Look in the business directory or ask around for a good person. A CPA is more for keeping track of your business and taxes, while an EA is more specialized in taxes and in helping you when you are having problems with taxes.

You may need an Enrolled Agent

But, the first thing we'll tell you is, "Get Organized".

If you odn't know where to start, put all like documents in a pile together. If they are receipts, total up all the similar things and put the category and totals on a piece of paper. Don't give your accountant the receipts, unless you want a bigger bill than necessary; the summary is fine.

If you have a business, you'll want to spend some time with your accountant. Ask him to help you organize things a bit on an "as you go" basis.

If you are a wage earner, you probably don't have nearly as much stuff to worry about, and in fact, with today's taxes, your W-2's and a few other scraps of paper and you're good to go.
