I picked up golden retrievers infected with hookworms, They are weak, look abnormal and have "pot bellies." my goal is to get these dogs better and get them in shape for adoption. I had them dewormed and got them shots but I think that they may have a skeletal abnormality at the hips and severe abdominal swelling. Do they need antibiotics?

They may need to be de-wormed again. Pot-bellies are often signs of parasites. I would call a vet, many will do services pro-bono for rescued animals that you are trying to rehabilitate and find new homes.

Deworming is not a one-shot deal... you need repeat dewormings two weeks apart, at least 3 separate dewormings or until 2 fecals come back clean. The dewormer only kills the adults in the intestines, not the juveniles that are still developing. Also there will be eggs in their environment. Hold off on any more shots until they are well-1) their bodies will not respond properly to it if they are already ill when the shot was given and 2) the shots will put additional stress on already weakened little bodies. If they have fleas (probably so if they were bad off when you found them), then they could be anemic or have tapeworms. You won't be able to tell for certain on the hips until they are older. Antibiotics would be called for only if they're having green discharge from the eyes and nose. Good luck!

The side effects of having worms will not subside right away!
They need to be dewormed again in two weeks from the first time, and kept on a good, nutritionally complete puppy chow for several weeks before they'll gain a normal look!

Thanks for rescuing them, and good luck in finding good, permanent homes once they'll recover from from the neglecting state you found them.

sometimes it may take several dewormings to get rid of this appearance depending on how bad it is. talk to your vet that did the deworming and shots if you are still worried. and good for you for taking these pups in. i'm sure the original owner of these dogs was on here not long ago asking questions about breeding their dog. yay for you! but if the infestation was bad enough it may take at least 2 dewormings and a few weeks of great care to get them looking normal. good luck.

and please do not add meat to their diets. if you are feeding a good puppy food it will have the right amount of nutrients they need. it will take sometime for them to recover from their rough start but they will and they are grateful for finding you.
