Prayer always works - but sometimes not in the way you expect. Prayer always works, but that doesn't mean prayers are always answered.
My prayers have been answered many times. Sometimes they're not - you know the song, I can't remember the exact title - something like, God's greatest gift is unanswered prayers? Sometimes that's true. Or they might have been answered in a way we didn't expect or recognize.
I like this explanation from our church's bible dictionary -
"As soon as we learn the true relationship in which we stand toward God (namely, God is our Father, and we are his children), then at once prayer becomes natural and instinctive on our part (Matt. 7: 7-11). Many of the so-called difficulties about prayer arise from forgetting this relationship. Prayer is the act by which the will of the Father and the will of the child are brought into correspondence with each other. The object of prayer is not to change the will of God, but to secure for ourselves and for others blessings that God is already willing to grant, but that are made conditional on our asking for them. Blessings require some work or effort on our part before we can obtain them. Prayer is a form of work, and is an appointed means for obtaining the highest of all blessings."
The most important things that happen in this world are when people change their hearts or change something about who they are. Sometimes that can only happen by prayer. Sometimes our prayers are answered through other people, or through our own actions after we've been inspired or strengthened or given wisdom to know what to do.
There's so much to be learned about prayer and through prayer. It takes faith, and knowing that God is so much wiser, we sometimes have to wait for answers to come according to His time table.

I do both (pray to God, & remind myself) but not at the same time.
As to whether I think prayer works, I agree with the following set of Bible-based articles ...
Does Praying Do Any Good? :
- Why do People Pray?
- Does Anyone Hear Prayers?
- Are All Prayers Heard?.
WHY Should You Pray?
- Prayer Can Solve Problems

prayer does not work. No more so than hope. To hope that your loved one gets better is the same thiing. Only difference is that your 'hope' mentions God.
If the hope or prayer does come true, narrow down, or be more specific with your next prayer. More specific time frame, specific amount, specific result, etc. You will find that your prayer means nothing more than a hope and your results will prove it.

Prayer does not work. It may make the person praying feel better, but as far as having any effect on actual events (healing, getting the job you want, etc), no it does not work.

Yes... I have had many answered prayers. A living relationship with God helps. Then God ALWAYS hears your prayers and answers with "Yes" or "No" or "Not Yet" or "Here is something better."

The purpose of prayer is to build a relationship with God. It isn't supposed to be used for asking for all kinds of things. If you put God in control of your life you won't have to ask him for anything because your life will work according to his will.
Would you give your children everything they want if they only talk to you when they want something?

I rarely go to church, but I get so much comfort from praying. I don't always get the answer I want, but I always feel that God answers my prayers.

You need faith along with what your'e saying. If you don't believe that Jesus can help you then it'll make it a lot harder, both for him and you. And when one prays, I think it's an offering, a plea or cry for help, not a way to make a 'forget me not' list
