i would ignore and hide from someone who i don't want to run into........because?
i owe her money?
i was caught gossiping about her?
her dress is identical to mine and she looks better in it than i do?
my boss, who thinks i did not go to work today cuz i was sick?
the host, because i was not invited to the party?
the bartender, because i did not tip him?
the drunk, because he is following me and trying to make a pass with his yucky hands?
my mother-in-law who is looking for me so she can critize me?
my daughter, because i have been telling her not to drink and i have a drink in my hand?
my pastor, as i have not been in church for sometime?
i just knew i shouldn't have come to this party!!!!

You probably don't want people to know that you have any association with them whatsoever for whatever your reason may be.
I know sometimes when I go to a party and there's a guy there that I know and he will try to be by my side all night, so I'll ignore him so other guys won't think he's my boyfriend. If you have someone near you all the time it makes it harder for you to meet other people or for guys to approach.

to make a point, a party is the perfect place to show someone up/insult them, in front of all your friends.
