Well yes, they can do. I have a wonderful Mother in law and I call her Mum, it is far better to get on this way. But, she must not be allowed to take over, just be there, when advice is asked for, not to tell her daughter in law at to do and that she is doing things wrong or force her opinion on her. In the background, giving love and having that love returned to her.

Where I come from, the attachment between mother and son is so strong, and the son is always cosidered as being special in the family. Since I got married, my mother in law has shown me hell!!! As if we're in competition! Who has to earn his affection...
Anyways the title "Mother in law" and " daughter in law" says it all, they're just mothers and daughters by the law, no affection, no ties, no emotional bonds...
You're the child of your won family, elsewhere you're just a relative.

No in the eyes of the law but in the contex of the family unit. My parents always said that they just got more children when we married. They never refer to them and daughter and son in laws and the relationship is very good.

some can and some can't my mother in law hates my guts for the pure and simple fact that she is no longer the only woman in her son's life. She and I have had ongoing fights and arguements about how my husband and i should raise our kids just because they don't agree to her ways. going on 7 years now three kids and she treats our son like he is heaven and our duaghters like dirt. enough about my problems my first mother in law and i got along like sisters so it really depends on the woman
