my car was totalled and i am planning to get another one in a few months once it clears my credit. my question is that I have vanity plates and I don't want to give them back cause then 'll loose them and I want to remove the totaled car from my insurance, can I keep the plates without insurance, maybe with an agreement with the DMV??? Any feed back will be appreciated. Thanks!

They are both right .... Transfer the Tags...

Keep them... The registation and Tags are Proof that You are the Car's owner at the Time that you Own the car. You paid for them and if it gets rebuilt the New Owner has to get their own Tags anyway....

Personalized plates may be transferred to another vehicle registered in your name, and they may be replaced if damaged, or stored with the DMV if you remove your vehicle from the road. Keep your plates and inform DMV you plan to transfer them to another vehicle. You have awesome plates NY. I like the Peace at Home plate.

See if you can tranfer the plates, i don't know if that can be done on a car declaired "TOTALED", I do know that YOU MUST TURN IN THE PLATES, if INS. is cancelled, heavy fines if you don't, REALLY HEAVY !

unless you didn't have gap insurance and/or still owe a balance on a totaled car it doesn't show up on your credit report...
