My cat does this for a few reasons that I have been able to tell:
1. She's scared.
2. She's tired and she wants to sleep in the dark.
3. She wants some privacy.

They also like to get under couches and armchairs...and shelves... and just about anything else they can squeeze under. Actually, my Jim Cat just went under my end table as I type this! lol

They are hiding from something, if they are under a bed and against the wall they can see in all directions and be covered from above,

cats hide under the bed because it's like a den to to them which offers privacy and a good place to hide from danger.

this depends, because i have a cat that does that and only comes out to see me (me being the owner) and she never leaves my room, if your cat is anything like mine, then your cat has a trust problem, is she adopted or did u raise her?
