What proof is there that these writings you believe in really tell the truth? How do we even know that they really exist?

I have never heard of these writings but I have heard of the bible. I can buy the bible in a store but I dont see these writings in stores. You say you only believe in what you can see. Well you can SEE the bible, touch it and read it. Where are these writings that you all rave about?

Penguin: The bible tells us about the earth opening and of the wicked sinking down into hell in Num 16:31, Psalms 54:16, Isaiah 5:14, Ezekiel 26:20 and Phillippians 2:10. Hopefully that is enough for you.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here...

Having "faith" is having a belief when common sense and\or evidence suggests otherwise.

Atheists, it is my understanding, do not agree with ANY diety-based faith, not just Christianity. Its not just the Bible that they "see" but deny the validity of. Its the Torah, the Talmud, the Koran, etc.

Just because you can "see" the bible doesn't make the words held within it true to everyone.

Can you see a comic book? Sure

Does that make Superman real? Not really, no.

Your logic is faulty, there.

I can also see a copy of "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Seuss. I can touch it and I can buy it. It's still gibberish and fiction. Just like the bible!

I never said I had any faith in ancient Sumerian writings. Nor did anyone else. No one was raving about anything. Certainly not "us all". You're exaggerating hugely. They just used it to illustrate that people were writing about these things (Such as fire in the earth) even before the bible was written.

I can see, touch, and buy Harry Potter in a store but that doesn't mean I'm going to run around with a stick telling everyone I'm off to fight the evils of Voldermort.

Because I know it's fiction, and I would look horribly silly doing so.

Just like the Bible. Mmm.

I have faith in these writings as there are a great variety of clay tablets that exist and are readily provable to exist. At any moment I could go to a relevant museum and see several of these tablets with the writing on display, and I assume reality is consistant in that these tablets don't materialize when I walk in based upon my every life experience.

The faith that these writings exist isn't a faith in the contents of their texts, which is reasonably simple. We also believe that the bible exists, but we don't necisarily believe the texts. Your argument is rather inept, as you're capable of seeing words that say the bible is INCORRECT right here on the internet, as well as basic transcripts of summerian breadmaking texts and so forth... Why don't you believe in those?

Information is not physical evidence, while physical scientificly reviewed evidence on a subject including MANY records of a civilization, as well as a still-developing field of translation and interperetation ARE physical evidence. Asking why we believe these writings exist is like asking someone why they believe that the Alps exist.

Did you supply the location of hell verse yet? Oh and fyi - you need to stop hailing all atheists as though we all think and act exactly alike, as Christians seem to do. I notice you don't bother to reply in any way to anyone's answers, you just think up new questions. Why do you give a fart in a windtunnel what, when, why, of how we think about anything at all anyway? You believe in what you think is true, and leave us alone to think what we think is true. Stop using your convoluted logic to attempt conversion - we've all been tested by far better than you and come through with our beliefs intact.

In the libraries of scholars and museums that you will probably never enter. I'm not an atheist, but your argument is completely illogical. I've never seen any books written in the Gaelic language, so I guess it must not be real??? That's absurd.

FYI: Archaeology proves AND disproves portions of the bible.

Atheists don't have a faith. Look at the word "a-theism," which means NO theism.

Your whole analogy that you believe in the Bible because you can see it and buy it a book store is plain silly, IMO. Using this analogy, we can all believe that Quidditch is a real sport because not only can we read about it in books, we can see it in movies.

I can see, touch and read the last Harry Potter book. I enjoyed reading it. Does it mean I must have faith in it and believe it ?

I don't think so.

Actually I believe in things people can reason with, god isn't one of them. Anybody who cant see that the bible are just stories/guidelines for which people are supposed to live by(according to the church) does not deserve life

I think everyone know there is bible, they idea is not whether bible exists or not, whether there is God sent prophets and those wrote it. so, don't mix up things between science, history and religion. because you cannot prove God by science. that's why we cannot conclude that there is God or not. and whether this God sent christianity or not, and whether Jesus might be a good man, god or never exists. we have to open our mind to all possibilites and follow what's logical and not harmful.
