First I have to believe that I "need" this product. This is not the same as "wanting" the product. Let try to me explain.
Advertising stimulates wants (desires) in many ways. But if it doesn't complete it's job and convince the prospective buyer that those desires are related to a need, the sale is unlikely to occur.
Even the most discretionary purchases must succeed on this level. For example, if you advertise an expensive sports car, it's easy to get most men to desire it. But you need to give each prospect a rationale such as "the ultimate driving machine" or "German engineering" that makes the "need" seem plausible, reasonable and actionable before a sale takes place.
