Looking to paint my living room - small room, only about 15x15, 2 small windows. Not a whole lot of natural light, but there are 4 recessed lights in the ceiling. Was planning on a deep orange, but am afraid that won't work with my honey oak entertainment unit. Couch is dark brown, floor is undecided. The room partially opens to the kitchen, which is a deep red/burgandy. White isn't an option, and I don't want to do a sage green... any suggestions???

Because oak is a yellow tone and you have the dark brown floor, you need to find something that is in the warm category, or a complementary cool color. Purple is yellow's true complement, but that's a little extreme for rooms. Because you want to keep the walls light, a dusty/wedgewood blue would go well or, for the warm range, try a rich, pale gold/mustard for the walls and whether blue or gold, accent in the red/burgundy would go well.

I think a very pale gold would look beautiful or like a buttercream (it would brighten up the room, too)!
Pick up the tones in your oak cabinet and that would go beautifully with your brown couch. You could put accents of red/sage green as well. .

Antique white (not white) for sure will make room bring in light and look larger than intense color in large area (wall) Put more intense color like burgundy / red and or gold as accents in the room like pillows on sofa and accent chairs to pull the house together. These colors flow. Dominant color in one room can be less dominant color in another room. Start with 3 to four different colors you like together. Maybe start with colors found in sofa fabric or picture behind sofa. Get inspiration from a fabric you see in a fabric store that you like.
Looking at color schemes in magazines help give you ideas also.

My aunt has a small living room and she painted hers Cranberry it was absolutely beautiful and made the room feel warm and cozy. She added a mirror or two to make the room look bigger than it was and some gold wall hangings. If you watch HGTV it will give you lots of ideas.

Why not a light tan? Since the room is small, you have to go light or the room will seem even smaller. If possible, do one wall is mirrors. That will also make the room seem bigger.
