I am at work all day and i get home 8pm. I only get to feed my dog once everyday and that is when i am home from work. He's trained not to poo or pee in his cage. I walk him everynight after coming home from work and it's the only time he relieves himself. Is that good or bad for his health?

If he is of an appropriate weight, and healthy, then the feeding is working for him. .However, if he is underweight, and inactive, he may need another feeding per day..

However, only allowing him to pee once per day, is just asking for a uinary tract infection and/or kidney failure.

You should be walking your dachshund at least 30 minutes twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. And potty breaks outside DO NOT COUNT towards the walk time.

As for whether him relieving himself at night only is bad for his health....are you nuts? How do you feel when you have to really go but have to hold it for an extended period of time. You're uncomfortable, gassy, and think about nothing but going to the bathroom. How do you think HE feels???? You atleast can go...he can't. He's not trained not to poo or pee in his cage--dogs won't do this where they nest.

I have 2 dachshunds myself and would NEVER subject them to the conditions you have just described. As previously mentioned, either get home during the day to take him out or hire a dog walker to do it for you. Your dog will feel much better (as will your guilt) and appreciate it more than you'll probably ever know.

As for feeding him...you'd do best to feed him in the morning than at night. Does he have access to water??????

While it is probably ok to feed him only once a day, I don't think it is ok to lock him in a crate all day.

Since I can only infer from your question that he has no other companionship during the day, what kind of life does this poor dog have? Locked in a crate all day, holding his "pee" and "poo" until you get home. What happens if you get home late?

Dogs are meant to be social animals and they need exercise and companionship. The best person to ask about his dietary needs is his vet, but you also need to ask yourself if you are the right person to have a dog at this time in your life. Be fair to the dog and yourself!

It would be wise to get a pet sitter or feed the take the dog out for 2 long walks a day (day and night). You should also feed the dog small portions before you leave and when you get home. Make sure to read the guidelines on how much to feed your dog according to its weight.

Its not good!!!!! its bladder and bowels needs emptying at least 3 times a day, Should feed him twice a day, Can't you get a neighbour or friend/family to come in or even come home in your lunch break just for 5-10 mins. Now you can find registered dog walkers, they can be an option.

I feel sorry for your dog. Pets need more attention than what you are providing. He needs a home that can give him the care he deserves. He should not have to hold his functions ALL day long. This will eventually cause a strain on his kidneys creating a medical condition in the future. You probably love him very much and vice versa, but I really do think he needs more companionship and attention than what you are giving him.

There is nothing wrong with feeding your god once a day. My dog gets one meal a day and she is 13 years old in March. She does however have some dry biscuits or toast in the morning, but not all the time. If you are overly concerned I would contact your local vetinarian just for a check up on your dog's health.Best of luck to you and your Pooch, you sound very caring :)

I feed mine two times a day and they get exercised 3-4 times a week and it does not add to there bathroom schedule. A dog no matter the age needs at least two meals a day in my opinion I have a 10 year old boxer who gets fed 2 times a day no matter his walk schedule, dog's need to eat......

I think it's bad that you keep him in a cage all day and that he's not allowed to use the bathroom until you get home! How could that not be bad for his health? How would you like to hold it in for a long period- every day? Perhaps you shouldn't have a dog at this point in your life.
I found a link on how to care for dachshunds. I'm sure they didn't put in "cage them all day" because that isn't good care and it should be obvious to the owners that it isn't.

I have 3 dogs, and all are fed once a day. Vet has never said that this was a problem. I think it's healthier... my dogs only get fed in the evening, because if we feed them before work in the AM, they're going to need to use the bathroom during the day. Since they're also housebroken, that means they're holding it in all day, which can't be healthy.
