Yes! That sounds like a great exercise. It might be more beneficial to actually run because you are working more muscle groups, but moving at all is great!
My suggestion is this, though - DANCE! If you want an exercise that you can do at home in a limited space, this is it. No one has to see you, just turn up some fast paced music and move and gyrate your body all over the place... maybe even hold some weights while doing it... it sounds silly, but it will work.

HI,
Yes it would. Also an excellent cardiovascular workout. You do not have to do it real fast for results, normal speed will work just fine. Maybe starting normal and do spurts of real fast.
Try doing real fast, till you are in the zone, then slow down to normal speed to cool down and repeat.
I workout daily on what the astronauts use. They used to use the treadmill, but now use the rebounder. (Mini Trampoline)
I run the equivalent of one mile every day. Outstanding total body workout, down to the cellular level, without the body shock of running/jogging.
You can see the one I use at:

Enjoy,

Yes. Moving your body is exercise - if you run - on a treadmill, on a path, or in place it raises your pulse rate, raises your metabolism, and burns fat. Things to watch for in the method you suggest would be injury, and boredom. I think that running in place you will be jarring your body more that running in a forward motion would. Get out on a path - get some outside air, get away from the TV,breath deeply.

Yes. Some one that is 150 lbs can loose 650 calories from running in place for an hour. If you are not a 150lbs divide your weight by 150 and then multiply that number by 650.
For more excercises that burn calories check out the web adress listed. No point in minmizing your excercises to one thing!

it would help but very little !! Its all about Range Of Motion !! Running in place works a very small portion of the leg muscles and Actual Running provides Full Range of Motion activating Most of the muscles. You may want to try Dancing movements they activate more muscles with greater Range !!

You would burn calories. Sugars burn first. Fats are converted to glucose before they are used.
