Is his dog house raised an inch or two off the ground? (direct contact with the ground will make his house just as cold.) Have you thought of placing an old rug/piece of carpet on the floor of the doghouse? Also, is there a door or flexible piece of canvas covering the entrance to keep out the cold and bitter wind? Does he have access to water (not frozen) and food in his house? These are all things that will make his doghouse a much more appealing refuge from the cold weather. Also, have you considered a doggy door to the garage and keep his house in there (even better)? But, be careful then that there are no poisonous items in the garage he can get into. Make sure, too, that there is no anti-freeze residue on the garage floor -- it's sweet smelling and will entice him to lick, but it is deadly! Good luck -- goldens ARE golden!

I echo the above answers - if the dog is cold, he'll go inside.

BUT.

If inside isn't warm enough then you have a problem; also, if he thinks inside is in your house (not his house) then you have another problem.

The first one is easy to figure out. Dress normally and go sit in the dog house yourself. Or take a temperature reading (about 18 degrees C plus will do depending on coat and breed).

The second issue needs a bit of background but I'll make some guesses - let's assume that you've moved his toys and any rug or carpet (and he does need something!) he uses into the dog house. You might also want to leave something with your scent in the dog house too (in case he is a bit needy like my Samoyed). Once you've got him used to the space, you should treat him when he uses it (as opposed to scold him when he doesn't) the first few times until he feels that it's his space.

Once he is used to the space and has been rewarded for using it, as long as it's comfy, the dog will benefit from the dedicated area and be super chilled but hopefully not chilly.

;)

If the dog is cold, he will go inside his house, unless hes super cold and trying to get you to bring him in the house, which you should if its that cold. People think that just because dogs have fur they stay warm when its really cold. Not true. You have hair in your head and your head still gets cold right?

Dogs aren't that stupid! If he really is cold or uncomfortable he'll go in his dog house unless their is potty in their or a dead animal! Make sure it's clean! Also my dog used to do the same thing! He wouldn't go in the dog house because it was colder in the dog house than outside! We got some old carpet and stapled it into his house all the way around, now he loves it! Hay also works great to keep them warm! If you are still concerened about him/her bring her in the house! Here, in Northern Ca, it was been getting about 17% at night we bring our dogs inside! it's crazy to leave a dog outside in that weather! Good Luck!

If it's cold, please don't leave him outside. That's being cruel. Bring him inside and get him nice and warm. Leaving a dog outside in cold weather can be very dangerous for the dog.

the dog will know how to regualte his own temperature. If he is cold enough, he will go inside.

If you are really worried you could always bring him inside your house.
