actually the eliptical machines with handles cause you to use more energy and get a better workout.When you hold on to the bar on an elpitical trainer without the handles your body isn't working as hard, because you are diverting some of the energy away from the lower body. If you can find one open, always go for an eliptical with the handles, and you will get a better workout.

Mostly for balance, its realy not doing anything significant, but I love the eliptical too and I like to think that moving my arms back and forth are doing something even just working my joints
