If it's a check card, it's probably got a daily maximum which is less than the rental place would tie up as a deposit. That happened to me once when I had a new card, and low daily charge limit. Even if you have enough to cover it, they still put that limit on it. One for withdrawals, and another for charges. You can visit the bank and ask that the max be raised. Also, sometimes, in a special situation, they'll raise the max for you on a one-time basis.

You should be able to use the card right up till the expiration date, but if it's 1-11, you better get a new one fast! It's already expired! -Or is that date january, 2011? If so, no worries there.

Many rental places won't take debit cards.

If there's not enough in your account to cover the entire estimated rental charge, no rental place will take it.
