How do I take screenshots? Do I have to buy something?

Easiest way is to press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard and then paste basically anywhere you want.
But if you want it as a JPG or BMP you can save it on Paint or similar application and then save it.
There is also tools (small software) which will give you more features when capturing your screen. Search on the internet for those.

it's free and it's no-frills.
I also like PhotoImpact5, it has a lot more than screenshots, it's kinda like photoshop, and it's only 10 bucks on amazon.com!

press the print screen botton on your keyboard....then paste it somewhere (from paint to photoshop....or even word...just paste it...haha) then, save it.
