I always get stuck with this question of weather or not to tip him. I feel that it is an obligation rather than a choice.

If you don't tip a pizza delivery guy you're a jerk. And I hope you don't order from the same place often. They remember who doesn't tip and will spit in your food. No joke. I used to deliver food and I spit in people food.

I usually tip 2-3 dollars, unless the driver is rude or drastically late. If the driver is only 5 minutes or so late you should even still tip since stuff happens, like trains or slow workers making the pizza. If you don't tip, you might not want to get pizza delivered from there again, or at least don't complain when the food is cold or messed up. It's an obligation, unless the driver is really late, and you tip waiters/waitresses and all they do is walk while drivers use their gasoline and have to be fast enough to keep your food hot.

It is not a law, but it is understood that the pizza guy is working on tips, not the $1 delivery charge that the boss gives him.

If you want to reverse roles, it will help you understand better. If you drove your car from the pizza place to your house for someone else, how much would be a fair tip in order to pay for your time and gas? If you are hoping to save money, then try picking it up yourself and see the cash difference. If it is a convenience worth using, treat them well. They have to live just as you do, so does their car.

This is coming from a person who lives off of tips.....it's not manatory, but you SHOULD choose to tip your delivery person. I waitress and make only $2.00/hr. There are many people out there who don't know how to tip. If you received good service you should be tipping 15 to 20 percent of the amount of your check. And if your using coupons or receiving some kind of discount....you should also be tipping on the amount before the discount is adjusted. I know this seems kind of high...but in my place of business I don't get to take home all of this money myself. Remember that your server is also tipping out before getting their fair share. Where I work no one pools their tips, so I am required to tip 2 bussers, 2 bartenders, and a food runner. I don't understand why people will tell you what a great job you did and then leave a 10 percent tip or less. This is an insult to your server for a job well done. Other people that should be tipped: delivery person, hair stylist, bartender, valet parking attendent, room service attendent (that's all I can think of at the moment). Please if you don't have the money to tip then don't ask for the service. These people are making minimum wage or less for servers, they are living off of your tips. Also remember to tip if you are ordering food to go. Many people think that because they are not sitting at a table they do not need to leave a tip. Sometimes it takes more work to make your food packaged nicely to go than it does to just bring it to the table!

Definitely. Two reasons. First is that people who don't tip the pizza guy are the personification of bad etiquette. The obligation you feel is a social rule, so tip them. Second, if you don't tip them, they know it. Your address gets known as a no tip address and you wont get extra cheese, ranch, ect. You will get pushed to the back of the run when they leave the store on multiple deliveries. Its in your best interest to tip.

There is no rule or law dictating you to tip. It's your choice whether to tip or not to tip, however, do consider that what the pizza delivery guy is doing is still service. You tip to show gratitude for the service given unto you so if you think the delivery guy sucked at what he did, then don't tip, but if you think he does his job well, then giving a tip as a gesture of gratitude would be good. Service is still service, and it is good to reward service that is done effectively, efficiently, and punctually. =)

Like waiters and waitresses, delivery drivers are paid VERY LITTLE per hour - usually MUCH LESS than minimum wage. They make their living off of TIPS, NOT what the restaurant pays them. In addition, they often are using their own cars, gas, etc.

While tipping is not mandatory, it IS the right thing to do. 15% is standard. 20% or more is very generous, and encourages the driver to give you great service in the future. You could give less than 15% for poor service, but keep in mind that delivery or service problems may not be the driver's fault. You should always consider tipping more for really great service, orders placed very late, outside the normal delivery area, really large orders, and/or in bad weather conditions.

A lot of people don't tip because they don't realize how very little the wait staff is paid. A nice tip can mean so much to someone who is working hard on her feet all day, struggling to make ends meet. I always tip 20% (usually a bit more) because it is nice and also easy to figure out the math quickly. You just move the decimal to the left one place to figure 10%, then double that for the tip. Example: 10% of $17.35 would be $1.73, and double that would be about $3.47. I'd probaby give the driver $21.00 in that situation, and tell him to keep the change: $17.35 for the food, plus $3.65 for a tip.

'Whether'. I started tipping them after reading responses here. In India, at first not tipping was okay. Of late it is expected. And they do have to search for my house or are on the road. So a little something won't hurt. I give depending on the bill. A 10 rupees (1 dollar is about 45 rupees) or a 20 is all right here.

Well I always tip the pizza guy/gal, but if they took forever to get there (more than 45 mins). Then they had better have a good excuse to get a tip out of me.

Tipping is an art form. Not only does it improve the day of the person that you're tipping, but it also ensures you better service in the future. Not to mention, many delivery guys/girls pay for the cost of gas during working hours out of their own pocket.

You should always try to tip, unless the service is just horrible. Pizza Delivery drivers have very good memories.
