Lots of theories but only one sure thing:
He (working through the beast and false prophet) shows up in the book of revelation at the same time the 6th vial is poured out, the 6th seal is opened, and the 6th trumpet sounds.
6-6-6!
Check it out.

No one knows for sure and I hope I am not around to find out when he gets here! But I think that it is showing that he is one short of God, God's number being 7. The 6 is repeated for emphasis.

If you want to talk metaphorically, God is the antichrist, and 666, if you exact division gets to one of the numerical truths of existance.
The formal explanation is that it was a translation mistake for Julius Ceaser. 666 was a translation error for a latin numerical equivalent for 'Cesar'. Or something of that nature.
Metaphorically, God (the angry god of the old testament) disagreed with his son on how to deal with humans before he went to Earth. They made a wager on whether jesus (one side of God) could save humankind. Jesus went to Earth and tried his way....He won the bet for then.
Eventually as God saw humans not change much, he became jealous of us getting off so easy, and not being 'truely good'...since some were evil amongst us and really were not good as he would see them worthy...so he would decide to try his way after Jesus lost the wager....to go to Earth as the antichrist.
As the antichrist, he would 'act' evil....always conveying the 'image' of evil in times that its favorable to be evil over good...that its all ok ...like a person in the party egging you on...
Only to take your soul when he finnally gets at you REAL being if your evil. In such a process, the 'antichrist' would act like a hypocrite (good on the outside, but evil on the inside and in private)....and in times when its favorable to act evil---he will act good to be legitimate, but 'give the impression of evil' in private..to be truely legitimate..
but in truth, he is good, he only gives the impression of evil...as if its ok, to catch evil...
and thus, that is how he will rule the earth and get rid of evil in his kingdom...by which then jesus will then 'lead' those that are good outside the walls of the totalitarian and suffering society constructed by the antichrist.
For those that are evil need control....those that are good, can live outside, in freedom.....
