They can. The real problem is that MOST chips have some sort of flavor on them, like "Bar-B-Que Chips" or "Sour Cream and Onion Chips," and those flavor coatings are LOADED with sugar. When you chew the chips, they get mashed down into the grooves of your teeth and then the sugar can do its damage.
Read the list of ingredients and you will see that sugar is very near the top of the list. Ingredients must be listed in the order of their content, so this means there is more sugar than anything listed later on the list. As a silly rule of thumb, if you see sugar listed in the top 5 ingredients, then it's just about like eating candy.

You do mean potato chips, correct? If they do, I think that it's because the soft, starchy chips may get stuck in your teeth, between the teeth, and maybe under the gum-line. If a person doesn't brush well and floss well after eating them, there may be a greater chance of decay from potato chips than from eating one piece of hard candy.

I would think that they cause more plaque which will build up and cause cavities. Candy has the sugar that will rot your teeth. I suppose they are both pretty bad but the candy is probably worse.

I've always heard that candy is sticky and that's why it's so bad for your teeth. I've never heard of chips being that bad.

Don't know about the teeth but they sure play hell out of the gums if they are those real tough highly caloric Hawaiian ones.
