Sometimes bipolar people create a false identity for themselves. She may be telling you these lies to get attention from you or others. She also may be telling lies to make herself feel better. I suggest you ask her why she is telling lies. I would also make sure that she is doing well on her meds, this may be a sign that she is getting worse. Hope this helps!

Separate issue.

(S)he still knows right from wrong, and true from false. It may be fear that telling the truth might not be accepted. Might be fear that they'll be regarded as "boring" without the stories.

It could be that your friend is allowing you a glimpse into their delusional world.

In either case, confronting the person with the truth that belie whatever they've told you may be the best way to deal with it.

This is, in fact, a common issue with people that have mental illness. However, it is something they can control, and saying that you have a mental illness is not a good excuse for lying.
