Bound's hubby here:
Marine snipers do go to war, they do covert operations and they go to war where the war WILL be. Marine snipers often are used to remove key enemy leaders which can avert the need for many battles and operations and save numerous lives on both sides. A key role of a sniper is to disrupt the enemy's leadership cadre.
(Marine) Snipers, by virtue of their job, must be competent and confident enough to operate independently of any form of military support. Often a military sniper with one shot can achieve the same objective as a platoon or company (or larger military unit).

Marine snipers are just like any other infantry Marine but instead of being an expert with a machine gun they are an expert with a sniper rifle. The break down is this. A battalion is 1500 Marines, within that battalion there are 5 companies, within a company there may be 3-4 platoons. There is usually 1 platoon of snipers consisting of 15-20 Marines. When that battalion deploys those snipers are divided up among the battalion and are used as needed.
The movies show snipers as these inhuman, stealth machines, and don't get me wrong there are probably some units out there that employ snipers like that. But the modern combat environment that we are seeing today in Iraq does not warrant the use of snipers in that fashion. They are usually put in over-watch positions in support of that battalions operations. Basically they are the eyes and ears of the battalion.

9 times out of 10 they will go to war. When you are a sniper in any branch of the military, you are categorized into a combat MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) which increases your odds for going to war. Snipers are used on the battlefield and in covert missions. Depending on what the nature of your mission is and the unit you are attached to, determines where you go.

All marines go to war. The CIA does all of America's criminal covert missions.

Yes, they go to war. They may be part of a recon team or be sent out to cover the perimeter of a firebase.

Sure they go to war, where else can they bump off people legally, certainly not here in the U.S.
