Rugers tend to be the "value" gun in a lot of instances. I like some Ruger firearms a lot, others I don't care for. The typical Ruger 9MM auto loader feels clunky to me. They don't fit my hand well and they often will rattle. Accuracy with samples I've fired is lackluster but usually adequate. The plus side is that they are a bit over engineered and therefore they tend to be very durable. Also Rugers seldom fail to go band when you need them to and that's worth a lot.

I personally don't care for the conventional double action auto loader. If were not going to use a single action auto loader I'd prefer the striker fired types like the Glock or the Springfield XD. Both of those pistols fit my hand a lot better and I much prefer the triggers.

These are mostly subjective things however and lead toward personal preference. Also I'd much rather see you spend less on the gun and more on practice ammo.

Ruger makes an excellent firearm. You could spend even less if you look at the very fine Taurus 9mm handguns. These are also very well made. Either gun will be reliable and will last you a lifetime with the right maintenance.

The Ruger semi-autos are a bit bulky, but they are reliable, yes.I gave my son a Smith & Wesson 5906,but that is over your $500 limit.I also own a Glock, and despite what some other answers you are getting,I have never had an accidental discharge. The Glock safety system is designed so that you must put your finger on the trigger in order to fire the pistol, just like with every other gun.Glock handguns have one of the highest reputations for function and reliability, with good reson. They are a great choice.
If you are set against a Glock,I would also suggest you look at the Taurus pistols. They also make avery good gun;I own 2 Taurus revolvers and they are am pleasure to shoot.
Given your budget,I suggest that you look at either a Glock or one of the Taurus Millenium pistols.I think these are a better choice than the Ruger you are thinking of.

I have been a F.F.L. Dealer for 25 years and a Policeman for 30. For the money, you can't beat a Ruger. I sold a local Police Department 12 Glocks when they first came out and 5 broke on the range the first time they were shot. Their great reliabilty is well documented.

Yes, Ruger 9mm pistols are good guns, but I would advise you to get a Glock Model 20 or 29. These are 10mm and the extra power is amazing. I also like Ruger rifles and have 6 of them, but a Glock 29 is in my pocket while I am typing this answer. My Glock 20 is in my bedroom...

Rugers are dependable guns. Ruger overbuilds their firearms so they tend to be heavy. If you ever have any problems with them Ruger will fix them free and ship them back to you free of charge. I however am not a big fan of 9mm I'm a .357 and .44mag fan and Ruger has these also so head out and do some shopping it's fun.

Get a CZ-75. They have superior accuracy (the Ruger is no match-not even close) and have a good slide-to-frame design. TZ-75 (Italy) is also a good choice, but unfortunately those are imported by EAA and they have lousy customer service. I wish I would have kept my CZ-75B SA (Single-action only) 9mm. I tried Glock and the trigger sucks unless you do a whole lot of practice with it. Rugers are ok, but they just feel cheap and that slide-mounted safety/decocker safety is a loser. You will not be sorry with a CZ-75. Mnay people think that the CZ-75 is the 9mm equal to the 1911 .45. Both are all-steel, accurate, and extrememly durable.

I have several Ruger and have no plans on selling any of them.
Most of my Ruger pistols are wheel gun (revolvers)
I have Colt, Kimber and Ruger hand guns.
I have owned in the past Smith & Wesson note in the past.
S&W is not a bad gun just did not please me.
I’ve owned 3 Glock and sold the last one to friend 3 days ago.
Glock is a fine weapon hands down.
But again it was not what I wonted, my hands are large and it never felt natural.
The gun for me must feel like it’s part of me. Natural or symbiotic, it has to fit.
That came together in a new Kimber Grand Raptor 1911 45 ACP, But with that came the price.
All my Ruger are not going any where, they are a perfect fit.
The Kimber by all means is my favorite center fire semi auto.
Ruger my favorite revolvers and semi auto rim fire.
My Colts well there Colts, and I do like Colt.
And my TC Encore is a blast to play with, but it is a single shot.
I cant see you will be disappointed with Ruger,

Ruger is a cheap semi-auto that will feed even the crappiest of ammo...but the gun itself is also cheap, unaccurate, and made of cheap plastic and cheaper metal parts. They don't hold their value and will some day crap out on you. Save up a little more and get a Springfield XD, best handgun on the market today and it comes with two magazines, a holster, a mag holster, and a easy mag loader. They shot great and was the gun of the year two years running. Another suggestion is the smith and wesson M&P, new to the market but really gun and well tested.
