AVG free anti-virus is good enough for personal use. It has an excellent trojan detection and pretty decent virus detection rate. It is also the lightest anti-virus out there, and hardly takes 1-2MB of your memory.

Avast is also a very good anti-virus that comes free. But it is very heavy on resources, it's interface is very difficult to understand and you will have to register(free of cost) every year in order to be able to use it. I prefer AVG to Avast.

AVG Free-Edition is a great anti-virus program. It's won awards. I prefer Avast, also an award-winning program. Check out download.com. You can read the review by the editors.

Both AVG and AVAST is free virus guards ! Comparitively I would say AVAST is good but only comparing it with free virus guards. Otherwise the best would be Kaspersky. Best things always come at a cost ! Check out this website to get comparisons, http://www.av-comparatives.org/

The only way you will be able to tell is when you have detected a virus yourself with the program.

Viruses are always changing. The best program is one that is continually updating itself....

Just like AVG, and they aren't asking money from personal users - how can you lose?

Solid! Best investment I ever made - $0! For the basic anti-virus, they keep their definitions up and maintained - and you can set it to custom update. AVG makes it's money by selling the larger packages to businesses, etc., so they can afford to provide us with the basic package!

Yes. I have it on my computer and it catches most viruses. It has a vault, firewall and scanning software, so it covers all bases. I recommend it.
