When I start up Windows XP on my computer, it boots up with great speed, but Windows doesn't load completely for almost a minute and a half. For expample, I tried to go to the Connect To drop down menu, and it won't respond for almost a minute. Once it loads once, it runs quickly and fine. This is a custom built computer with a 2.41 GHz processor and 1GB memory (single stick), and I have plent of hard drive space. Is there anything I can do to correct this problem?

One minute is normal if you have a number of applications you wish to begin at startup.

However, I assume you have an adequate housekeeping system on your computer so that each days unnessary temps are cleaned out, a minimum of startups are allowed, your registry is kept clean and the daily clutter of dll's and logs are removed after each session.

The best general FREE program is EASYCLEANER which you get from Toni Arts but be sure to avoid the ones that charge you.
Easy Cleaner is still free but other people have stolen it and try to sell it for $2995. Avoid these and be sure to only download the FREE version. It will clean up hundreds of slow-downs on your machine.

Do this. Click START at bottom left of Tool bar, then click RUN, then type MSCONFIG in the window and then press OK. Then go to STARTUP and in this window you can see all the programs that start up. Just delete the ones you do not need on start up

It sounds like you have overwhelmed your RAM. Anything with graphics, especially games, creates very large files.

I suggest you do all you can to free up memory:

- set wallpaper and screensaver to blank or none
- check startup menu - load only those programs you intend to use daily.
- click Tools, Internet Options, Delete Files (offline)
Regularly, run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, and defrag.

Check your process list for unneeded helpers.
