The police officers do care. However, they need a lot more to go on than just names of people. Basically what you gave them was word of mouth.
Yea, the cop can take down the names from you and look into it a little bit, but unless he sees something pretty much right off the bat going on, there isn't going to be much getting done.
You have to realize that cops are given names like that all the time and they have to decipher a lot of things, which includes the fact that you may just have a vendetta against those people. They also have to find some sort of cause to arrest the people.
One other thing to look at that a lot of people don't, is that although you may "know" or just think you know what is going on with them, the cops do have other jobs and other priorities that they do need to take care of. They can't just walk into the house and try to bust those people that you pointed out, and they can't just sit there all night solely on the word of a nieghbor who thinks that there are drugs being used.
Talk to the cops again and see if you can get them something concrete on those people. Cops do care.

When you gave the police this man's name, did they ask you if you wanted to fill out a complaint? And did you refuse? Police do not have the right to approach someone anonymously accused of a crime by another citizen, where no one is being killed, ya know?
What you can do is contact the DEA, take video of the man committing his particular crime, contact your local newspaper (usually the free papers are better at tweaking the police to do something about a crack corner- they have less to lose), or if you're serious about the police coming to investigate, sign a complaint and be willing to testify in court, if it comes to that.
There could be other factors as well. This guy could be a police CI (Confidential Informant), and therefore, relatively immune to drug prosecutions, this being how he maintains his street credibility. He could actually be an undercover drug officer (as unlikely as this seems- I don't know really know enough details, so I'm including ANY scenario to explain the facts).and is feeding his superiors the names of persons higher in the crack hierarchy. Being known to the police, it may be a situation where they figure they can pop him when they need to, but right now, his replacement would be even worse. But rest assured, if its a money making corner, he WILL be replaced. Are you prepared to video and sign complaints each time?

Peace and be still my brother, the police needs to find an confidential informant or an undercover officer, to infiltrate the system, to do surveillance, and then they will act when a reasonable amount of evidence is complied.
But, if this is a small time scumbag, they will do it when time permits, sad but true. Makes you wonder why all the hype on turning people in like this, if they fail to act in a timely manner, regardless of what the situation is.
Finally, the police may had made him an informant, they get to do what ever they want in regards to the aforementioned, they are allowed to continually break the law blatantly.
Good luck, Bud, be safe!

And you're still alive? Lucky you! Maybe you should take pictures of the crack deals/dealers and send them along with the names and addresses to the feds. Of course, you should do this anonymously and be sure to mail them from a different town to protect yourself -- better yet, seal them in an envelope, put the correct postage on it and send it to a remailing organization to have them mail it from a different state. You've got to protect yourself! Make sure you use a digital camera and print your own pictures without putting them on your computer. You can print them through your camera and then erase your memory card to protect yourself. Or, you can stick the memory card in a special place without telling anyone so you will have insurance for the future.

because what you have given them is not evidence or helpful. I am assuming the person you turned in is probably very well know. The police need more than just your own personal suspicions to act. If you know so much, become a confidential informant and share what you know. Otherwise, you might as well tell them that your neighbor speeds to work.

You can call the police with an anonymous tip. Use a pay phone though - the police have automatic caller ID so they'll know who/where you are if you use your own phone. You can also leave anonymous tips on the FBI web site.

How many "Crack" dealers do you think there are in your nice little town there? I would venture to say, alot. So with that in mind, do you think that just because you told them he is selling dope, means they can just go kick down his door? Educate yourself before blaming and criticizing the police department.
Become more proactive in your neighborhood. Take steps to become familiar with your neighborhood cops, and give them evidence or at least sufficient grounds to write a search warrant.
Don't be so quick to become bitter towards law enforcement. It doesn't help any to curse those who risk their lives to protect you and your family.

They'd have nowhere else to buy their own crack from?
The police are not paid to care. They are paid to arrest people and make their lives miserable. Your crack dealer is probably very powerful and the police and judges are scared of him.
They also need proof.. maybe they don't have proof sufficient to arrest him.

Based on your tip, the cops might start watching him, but they can't arrest him on your tip alone. They have to catch him in the act. Otherwise all you would have to do if you hated someone is tell the cops they are a crack dealer.
