A friend gave me some herbal teas with herbs in them I never heard of before (in case you read my previous questions, yes I do have friends who give me strange things to drink!) Anyway I would like to keep drinking Honeybush tea because it seems to be relaxing and takes away my anxiety. However when I drink it, an hour or more later my throat feels swollen. It could be a coincidence because I had a cold recently, but I'm not sure. I've only been drinking the tea since yesterday. Should I be worried about it?

To the person who said I should go to emergency, it's okay, it didn't last that long and my breathing is fine. It was just a minor swelling like swollen lymph glands.

yes you are intolerant to the tea for sure...it happens the same with me when I have ginger tea..I made my food intolerance test and I am intolerant to ginger, so stop it and don't use the herb for the next 3 to 6 mnts..after that you can try again to introduce but slowly..like once a week first..etc.

Food allergies can cause just your throat to swell up and to the point that you cannot breathe. Stop drinking the tea, it might make you anxious about a swollen throat or cause a severe reaction. Take a shower and Benadryl or see a doctor if you are having a hard time breathing.

Yes it can make your throat swell if you are alergic to it.
Worse, for some people an alergic reaction gets worse for the same sized dose on repeated occasions.
For example a bee sting the first time may raise a welt. But after the body develps a reaction to it that second sting may well bring on a condition known as anapolatic (sp?) shock. (The thing you see in movies where they need an antihistimine injection to reduce the hystamines).
Soooo.. bottom line... once you find out you are alergic to something it is NOT a good idea to take 'just a bit' of it.
ok??
.(now if I were an MD I would prob. know how to spell all of that correctly.....ah well)

Hard to say if that is your problem, but allergies can cause one's airway to become so swollen that it can become an emergency situation. Many people have a terrible anaphylactic reaction to peanuts, shellfish, etc.
I would refrain from drinking any more tea and consult with your doctor regarding the ingredients, etc.

yeah. a swollen throat could block your air passage and kill you. It's pretty serious. Keep benadryl handy in case of things like that. Get over your cold and maybe try a little bit of that tea again to see if that was what made your throat swell.

Sometime allergies do cause your throat to swell. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience.More details and home remedies available at

It could be an allergic reaction. Most ppl use CHamomile tea to relax as Honey bush has (supposed) anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-viral properties which may be the things your having a reaction to.

It is possible to get just that reaction. And you may have to avoid that tea in the future. A shame: It sounds delicious!
