You are off to a good start with knowing what you want---a short haired female and under 15 pounds. Call your local shelters and let them know what you're looking for. They can put you on a waiting list and notify you once a smaller breed comes into the shelter. When they call, go visit and make sure the dog has the personality you want---don't just settle for the 1st one! She might be cute and under 15 pounds but take some time to interact with her--she might not be the right one for you!!
Also, ask the shelter about tips. They'll tell you what food she's been eating...what kind of bed she likes...what toys she likes. Don't be afraid to ask questions---they're there to help the owner and the animals!
I like both the names you listed. I'd find the right dog, then find the perfect name for her.
Have fun finding the right puppy!!! You'll find the perfect one, just be patient!! Also, great idea on adopting a dog from the shelter!!☺

To adopt a pet you and your parents should look at petfinder, www.petfinder.org (as the above post says). As for the food, usually a shelter/rescue will recommend the food to give you based on their current diet. Some shelters give a sample of puppy food.
If you are under the age of 18 you will have to have your preants go with you to adopt, because most shelters will not adopt to children or people under the age of 18.
Food wise, the best food is one with the first few ingredients being meat and the last ingredient being corn (possibly no corn). You also should look to see if the ingreident has meat by products in it, which is not good.
You can purchase food at any local pet store in your area as well as grocery stores.
Good Luck.

Hi, I think it's so great that you want to adopt a puppy! if only more people did that. well the best food for a puppy would be soft food from a can, preferiblly pedigree, but all dogs react different to different kinds of food. You should also feed her, every once in awhile, eggs. eggs make the the puppie's coat glossy, and it's good protein for it.but to know for sure ask your local vet.And remember to always spay a neuder your pets! lol. and i think the name Cali is such a good name, i dont know holly just doesnt sound right for some reason, Cali sounds much much better

If you're adopting a puppy, then go with a puppy brand food. We use Science Diet for ours, and it's what our vet told us to get for them. You should see what the shelter gives the puppy, because sometimes dogs have a hard time changing foods. If we vary any bit from our dogs normal food, they get stick to their stomachs and get bad diarrhea and sometimes throw up.
As for naming your dog, just wait and see what you think of her. My family has had dogs since I could remember, and whatever name we planned out, usually didn't work. We waited to see what name "clicked" with the animal. If they responded to it, or whatever the case may be.
Good luck! :) It's great that you want to adopt a dog from a shelter. Though finding a puppy may be hard. There's so many older dogs who don't have good homes, you should consider them too :)

Both names are cute but I think I like Cali best. Purina offers a good quality food and Purina One is better.
I feed Neutro Natural Choice small bites for small dogs. It can be purchased at Petco or Petsmart and most of the top name pet stores.

You might have trouble finding a 15 lb dog at an animal shelter, they usually have huge dogs. You should try a breed rescue or search on petfinder.com if you can't find one at the shelter.
Get a high quality food like Nature's Recipe or Royal Canin...
And I like the name Cali better :)

Go to petfinder.com I just adopted a dog there that I love so much! You can put in small dog, female, age and your zip code and it shows you all the dogs in shelters in your area.
Most shelters around me microchip and spay the dog before you take it home included in the adoption "donation" price.
