OK, some do work on echos the sonic type. But the ultrasonic measuring devices are not very accurate and have a pretty limited range. I prefer the laser type. I have and use one sold in the US by Hilti, its made by a German company. It is accurate to within 1/16 of an inch on 600 ft.

I use it to make field measurements. I have to travel to customer locations and its not practical or economical to bring an assistant along to help make the measurements. It is also handy to make measurements across an open space where using a tape measure would be impossible.
