their worth should be your love. if you think they need to work to get this then you don't need them. a dog will protect it's territory naturally. you're asking for legal troubles and difficulty finding homeowners insurance if you make them guard dogs. but if you must then i guess you deserve this. by you using the phrase making the dog understand it's worth, i worry for your wife. my advice would be to leave you and take the dog and have them trained to protect her from you.

First I have to say that unless there are non-mentioned specific needs to having a dog trained this way (you live in a dangerous area, you have had targeted threats made to your family, have had previous break ins etc) I don't understand why you would want to train a dog this way. The statement you made that says you want them to "understand "their" worth in your household" makes me nervous. A dogs worth in the household is measured in so many other ways! But, I would rather if you plan to train your dogs to act like this that you do it responsibly, so here goes...

You don't state where you are located, so I can't give you exact locations. But, there are agencies that will help you to train your dog in a SAFE, RESPONSIBLE manner for personal protection. Usually, you don't have to train most dogs to protect, they will do it instinctively, but if you want them to be specifically trained, go with a well know, responsible trainer. This will reduce the risk of your dog just becoming an aggressive dog. Without targeted training, they will most likely just earn you a lawsuit, someone else an extremely painful experience and most likely a lifelong fear of dogs (possibly death!) and for the poor dog, euthanasia.

Please look for a trainer that stresses the need for safety - for the dog, yourself and your community.

This place offers personal protection training for dogs. I would start with this page as it stresses "The main emphasis is on CONTROLLING A SITUATION! We encourage verbal skills over physical response. The best way to deal with a confrontation is to avoid it all together."

If you are not in this area, I would call them and ask for advice on finding a training center in your area.

i've never met a dog that needed to be taught that, much less a dobie. If you are good to the dogs, they will love you and protect your family and your home.
