Millions of people just vanish off the earth??

It happened when I was a child! Our fire bombing of Germany and Japan and the resulting fire storms killed a million innocent men, women and babies culminating in the two A-Bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki where 80,000 were vaporized in each. Saw it all in movie theaters on newsreels.
It didn't effect me much as I was only 13. I was being raised as a Christian (even being taught Christianity in public school) and often wondered how grown ups could do such things if they were Christian and were supposed to, "love their enemies", "turn the other cheek" and "forgive".
