why can girls say that other girls are pretty or cute without being called lesbians, but if a guy says another guy's cute or pretty he's automatically gay?
I hate that!

It's the stereotypical culture we live in. Girls are much more honest about what they think because most girls aren't wacko nutjobs who automatically assume something every time someone else says a sentence. Guys tend to assume lots of things, however, which leads to the problem of them thinking a guy is gay if he finds another guy cute, even though most guys tend to know when a guy is attractive even if they aren't gay.

Well being a gay man, I will answer from my perspective. I personally try not to use the word cute when describing men. Puppies are cute. Men are handsome, sexy or good looking. I think by using adjectives which are to the point and not overly descriptive you can make a statement that sounds like u are paying a compliment regardless of your sexual preference. Cute doesn't indicate sexual attraction either. If cute meant that you want to knock boots with someone then a lot of people might be perceived as being into having sex with animals because everyone says puppies and kittens are cute.

I think its because both genders see pretty or cute being an important feature of females, whereas strong, smart and successful are important features of men (due to cultural expectations). If one mentions something outside of the defining criteria, then one must be mentioning which is of particular importance to them personally. If a girl mentions that another girl is strong or successfully, that is outside the culturally defining characteristics, but its OK, because it doesn't imply romantic interest. If a guy mentions a quality outside the culturally defining characteristics which implies a particular interest in that quality, and if what he mentions is the guy's looks, conclusions are drawn.

Most straight men don't think that way in terms of other men. So when a guy says something like that people probably assume he is gay. Unless a man is talking about his newborn son.

It depends who you talk to. If you talk to a mature guy I pretty sure he'll take it as a compliment and then act accordingly depending if he's gay or not. This holds true to all guys but not if they are immature or if they are around other guys.
These days the world is crazy so you can't think about society because then you'll drive yourself crazy.

I think is has something with how guys perceive they will be judged by women when they say something like that.
I also feel that there is something about how women treat guys that show a sensitive side. How often do your female friends go for the guys that treat them badly? Do they then complain to you about what a selfish creep they were and then the next day go out with them again?
Somehow this has something to do with survival of the species. When someone figures this out please let me know. ;)

thats not totally true. ive heard straight guys say another is handsome, and I was watching jay leno and he called george clooney "cute."
really though its steroetypes I think. pretty and cute are always feminine (coming from gay guys or hetero girls) it seems, if your refering to a male. problem is most gay guys dont "act gay" if I do say so myself.

i totally don't agree with society's double standard on this issue.. but heck, i don't agree with anything society has created regarding gender roles..
i just realized recently that i am bisexual, and as soon as i go public with this to everyone i know, then i will openly make comments about guys being cute!

a common double standard of society. its like if a guy goes to a club and sleeps with a random chick then he's the bomb, but if a girl does the same then she's a #$@!

Cause if you have machismo, you dont say things like that. If your a phag you do. Real men might say that another is handsome, but cute is not a word one 'man' says about another.
Hope that helps.
