Abortion is not considered an unforgivable sin; however, because the act of pre-meditated abortion is similar to murder (please note that I said "similar to" and not out-and-out murder, but it is a sin against life), there is a process in place - to the best of my knowledge it has been in place for years now - that in order to be baptized into the Church one would have to get clearance from the bishop or appropriate authorities. I am relying on information recalled from questions prospective investigators are asked prior to being baptized, but this was several years ago.

First, let's specify terms. By abortion, do you mean the intentional termination of a *known* pregnancy by the mother? Or are you including "the morning after pill" as abortion? Are you going so far as to include birth control? I don't, but you never know what someone is thinking if you don't ask.
I'm certain that you are not including "spontaneous abortion" in your question, but you might care to know that is another name for a miscarriage.
Now for my answer: I only know of one "unforgivable" sin. That is the denial of God when you know otherwise. So, if you don't know, tread with care. =]
Of course, that is the extent of God's unforgivable sins. Everything else has a bit of leeway. Even "murder" could be forgivable, depending on the circumstances. That is the case even in the understanding of we flawed humans. There is what is known as "justifiable homicide" as well as "self defense" and "manslaughter" even though those all involve the death of another person.
I would have a very hard time forgiving someone who had an abortion for anything other than extreme health risk. I love children, and have only been able to have one of my own so far.
My stance on the whole abortion thing is that if you aren't willing to have a child, don't do what it takes to get that child. Yes, I mean NO SEX. If you have sex, you are sending a clear invitation to have a baby. The exception, of course, is rape (I include the majority of incest as rape).
So, I believe that every pregnancy that begins should end with childbirth when at all possible. Whether the mother (or father, for that matter) keep the baby is another topic, but I don't believe in purposeful termination of a fetus.

i am not mormon however i was talking a lot with an elder and he said there are 2 sins unforgivable. murder as well as blasphemy.
however my Bible says there is only one sin and that is blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. all other sin is equal.
this is were mormons will argue and say that the Bible is mistranslated. and this is why the dead sea scrolls come into play because it shows how accurate the Bible still is today. all sin is forgiven you have to want it. and repent from sin. that is to turn away from sin.
i believe it to be a sin however i believe that you can be forgiven as well.
well the Bible says all sin is forgivable. not if you killed in self defence you are forgiven but if you killed because you wanted to you are not forgiven. however God knows the heart. if you are truly sorry or not. the same for on a death bed. if you are truly sorry you will be forgiven. only God can judge us. if you are on your death bed and just say ok i am sorry for all i have done as a last min. effort to play it safe that is for God again to know. he knows our heart. it says we are to confess our sins amongst one another. that is if i hit you i should come and tell you i was wrong. not go to my wife and say what i did. that is you and i. as well as go to God. at the same time however it says if the person is not around then you just take it up with God.

The reason for murder is because of the requirements to receive forgiveness and Repenting.
Lev. 6:4 Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found, one must repent.
Since you can NOT restore a person’s life, how can a person TRULY REPENT?
The only two exceptions to this are in self defense—protecting yourself or others, and in the service of your country when the Military are ordered into battle. The leaders are the ones that will be judged for that.
Also where our church would disagree about murder being forgiven, is anybody can say they are sorry or confess, ex; deathbed confession; this is also why the LDS do NOT believe in deathbed confessions of repentance, you can NOT make recompense and turn away from the sin. So there is NO TRUE REPENTANCE.

The Bible states that blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is an unforgivable sin. However, after the Bible stated that, the Master, Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, was offered as a sacrifice by the Father God to provide forgiveness for all who would claim Jesus as their Savior. Therefore, I believe the blood of Christ, the Lamb of God, is ours to claim as our own. For God so loved the World...

I'm not Mormon, but anyone who is concerned about forgiveness after an abortion should go through the free online post-abortion Bible study available at http://www.healinghearts.org It is completely Scripture-based.
Anyone who is currently thinking about aborting a child should visit http://Abort73.com as soon as possible.

Hmmmmm.... as I understand it, the only unforgivable sins are denying the Holy Ghost and denying Christ after you have received a testimony of his atonement (or something similar to that).
