He invented it to improve industry, and we still use the idea today. Interchangeable parts are parts that can be interchanged(..duh...) Like two same types of cars have the same parts in size and shape. Before this idea, every automobile/musket/etc. had different parts, so they were more expensive to fix because they didn't have that spares of the part. Now imagine that the idea of interchangeable parts was created. Now, they could make cars at a faster rate cuz they all have the same parts, and they could make spares. They got cheaper. Now, we use this idea to all sorts of things. Eli Whitney also invented the cotton gin, and interchangeable parts were invented in 1798. wow i wrote a lot

Eli Whitney usually gets the credit, but the answer is more complex. The wikipedia article in the link is a good start.
