Well, the apple is actually the reproductive organ of the tree. That's why it contains seeds, in the "ovaries."
It could be argued that we are all just here to reproduce, and plants are no different. Expending more energy to pass on the genes is part of the life cycle.

So that animals will eat it and carry off and redeposit it's seeds to places far beyond where the tree could have broadcast them on the wind alone.
