Two year olds like the boxes more than the presents. How about a board book.

Anything that can keep her productive. Two year olds are into EVERYTHING, so I don't think you can go wrong with anything in the 3 and under. My daughter is into cars, as well as baby dolls. She loves to color (though I don't suggest crayons or markers for her parent's sake) So I bought her some of those color wonder (I think it's what it's called) markers. They only show up on certain paper. And they don't dry out for weeks, so if they forget or lose the cap, they can keep using them. You can also try one of those Magna-Doodle things. You can't really go wrong with a two year old. Any toy will sure to be a hit.

Wonderful picture books. Or warm, funny books. Like Seuss, Carle, Jan Brett.
Also, really cool alphabet books in different themes.
wow - it's so wierd to see all these recommendations of tv related things for a 2 year old, when the american academy of pediatrics says tv watching before 3 is bad for a child's brain. not to mention, as demonstrated here, how the little kids are all made into consumers of brands by 2 years old...

The favorite themes seem to be Barney, Dora the explorer, My little Pony, Strawberry shortcake, Care Bears. All have videos and numerous toys. Most of the labels say three and up for the age, but there are enough to choose from for a 2 yr old. The Care Bear "teddy bears" are especially cute. And they all have clothing items with picture t-shirts for example.

If she's into Dora, The Backyardigans, etc. you can buy her things like that. Certain toys of her interest, a Disney cartoon. (My daughter loves animal movies.) Simple puzzles with 10 pc. The hard plastic type work best, as they can see the perimeter. Stuffed toys, dolls, etc.
When my daughter was 2, I bought her these 2 big toys (Pooh & Tigger). They were almost her size & when squeezed, they talked. She loved it!
Another option is to go to the store with her & see what she points out. That's a sure fire way!

v tech v smile. My two year old little girl loved it. I agree with the dora comment. My little girl has LOVED dora since she was one and is still a die hard fan! Clothes is also a good present. I love it when my children get clothes instead of toys. My daughter loves getting clothes too. Just make sure you get the right size first.

What I wanted to say has already been written in before me except for one thing. My 2 year old daughter LOVES her "cut it toy" made by a company called Melissa and Doug. It's actually wooden fruits and veggies that can be cut and re-attached (via velcro) and comes with a chopping board and knife- "just like mommy and daddy"! It's adorable to watch her play with it- we keep it in the kitchen. It's got a very satisfying chopping sound- imagine velcro being cut! Inspired by this toy, we dropped the grandparents a hint so that they get her another Melissa & Doug set that is a tool kit. Now I want everything by them! (It's not flashy or noisy- LOVE IT because it's so simple yet fun.)

A PONY! Jeez don't you know anything? All little girls want ponies.
In reality though, I found that the best presents I could give to little kids were found at the dollar store.
They won't last. They usually have no value as teaching aids. But you can get a big bunch for $20. Wrap them all separately and the kid will think you are wonderful.
