So, I am so damn tired of people trying to be politically correct all the time. I understand that there should be a level of respect out there, and that there are some things that are just way to derogatory to say, and names that you should never refer to people by. For example, I am Puerto Rican, and I don't know why but it bugs the **** out of me to hear someone ask me, I can see that you are a Hispanic-American, of what National Origin are you, why cant they just say Hey Man, You have an exotic look to you, where are you from. And usually, its the people that are ****** up in the head, that feel the need to clarify everything to not hurt anyone's feelings. And, I know some people that prefer people being politically correct, I want to know you guys feel about this subject? Is it a perfect waste of time, or do you feel like its a good thing, and why?

I don't like it either.

Of course, we shouldn't be disrespectful, or offensive to anyone, but please people! We now exaggerate, about the littlest thing.

It's gotten out of hand. I'll admit, I do try to remain PC, because you never know who's going to take offense, but it's a hassle.

The whole Happy Holidays vs. Merry Christmas this past year, was way over board. If we're buying Christmas trees, why are we going to call them Holiday trees?

About the Hispanic and Latino terms. I'm really not even sure when, or how to use them, and I'm Mexican - American. That's just a whole other issue, that peeves me. If I single out my ethnicity, it's wrong, if I don't it's wrong. What gives? For that matter, I'm just American.

Honestly people have to develop a back bone, the "real" world, isn't PC.

God bless you. (Would that make me politically incorrect)?

I don't mind a little respect and common decency and I've always believed you should treat people as they treat you. But the Thought Police of the world have not only gone overboard, they've sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Pity they don't drown eh? And sadly, as a Journalist, I find at times I have to play the mindless game of be careful you don't offend anyone. Gee, that pi$$e$ me no end, especially as one of the column I write is designed to bring the lowlife err, sorry, people who have made a mistake or 1000 but who need to be forgiven as they have good reason why they're the a$$holes of the Earth, oh, where was I? You get the gist I hope!

You're saying you don't want people to act politically correct all the time but that is not what the body of your question is saying. In fact, what you're really asking is that people be politically correct in exactly the way you want them to be. They're not even allowed to mention your obvious Hispanic heritage at all but must say that you have an "exotic look" and then ask you where you're from....in that order. You're being even more picky than most people of minority ethnicity are in this country.

So, if anyone is being out of order about the situation it's you. At least the poor schmuck who called you Hispanic-American was trying his/her best not to offend you. You're pretty lucky it wasn't my grandma you came across, because she doesn't even know the meaning of politically correct and probably would have assumed you were Mexican and tried to speak her hillbilly version of Spanish to you. Is that really what you're wanting people to do around you, because that is definitely not politically correct and at the same time it is not purposely inappropriate either? From the "instructions" you gave above, I would say the answer is no. So, at least be honest with yourself and admit that you are indeed sensitive about your heritage, maybe even more than most. Therefore, I'd avoid asking people to stop being politically correct around you and instead just recognize it as people actually caring about your feelings and doing their best not to upset you.

As far as political correctness being a waste of time, I think it definitely has a purpose for now, until people stop having chips on their shoulders about their ethnic heritage. I am of Albanian heritage, but I have an Italian last name which everyone is always assuming is Mexican. That means people are constantly trying to speak Spanish to my husband and me whenever we go to a bank or any other place where they know our names before they know us. I think it is hilarious, and everybody ends up giggling at the messed up situation. I think humor really is the key to all of this. If you can find a way to be amused by it instead of taking it all so personally, then you may stop even noticing how people speak of your heritage and just notice that they're interested in you. That's why they're asking.

I agree that political correctness has become ridiculous.I think that as long as you live your life with tact and dignity, you're doing fine.
