Hi Lisa...unless the propane heater manufacturer "specifically" states the propane heater can be safely used inside then it should be safe from Carbon Monoxide poisoning to humans and animals. If you are uncertain it's best not to use one as this can prove fatal to both humans and animals. Most propane heater CANNOT be used indoors.

If the propane heater is okay to use indoors (make sure you read the label) Then it is okay for your babies (pets).

I cannot stress enough, though, to READ THE LABEL! I live in Washington and we have had some recent cold spells where people lost power for over a week. So many people brought in their generator and BB Q's and used them for heat and DIED! Carbon Monoxide can KILL you in MINUTES! If there is no warning label on the propane heater, you need to look up the manufacturer and call or find information about it on line BEFORE you use it! I don't want anyone else Dieing or getting hurt from Carbon Monoxide! Please Take Care!

When I lived one winter in France while teaching with the Army many American used propane heaters as there was not central heating in most French houses. There were many fires and even several deaths (from carbon monoxide poisoning) and fatal fires.

Maybe they are safer now and I would be very careful. If you are thinking of heating a space for animals I would think it would be particularly dangerous.

Are you talking about this as a main source of heat, or those emergency heaters? I'll answer it for the prior.

Unless they are silly enough to come too close to it, or for too long and get singed, then it's fine. My parents have used them for years and with several animals in their home, and we have had no problems. In fact, my cat used to love laying in front of it and getting nice and toasty in the winter! She died of old age, but she spent many long hours in front of her heater.
