1) Keep your expectation realistic. The weight didn't come on overnight, it won't come off overnight either.
2) Start small and work your way up. Changing a couple behaviors at a time, then adding more, will help you continue to stay on your diet. Too much at once may cause you to feel overwhelmed.
3) Tell everyone you are on a diet. They'll keep you honest, stop baking you brownies, and be a source of support when you need it.
4) Count calories. Calories in and calories out (diet and exercise). The only scientifically proven way to lose weight. Try to eat about 500 calories less per day (1,500 if you started with the standard 2,000 calorie diet), and you will lose a pound a week.
Good luck!

It depends how much weight you have to lose. If you are looking to lose massive amounts such as over 100 pounds, surgery such as gastric bypass may be a good option for you. However, the best fail-proof method is the one we have all heard before. Increase your cardiovascular activity, try walking extra 30 minutes a day. If you are up to more, join the gym, or go running 45 minutes a day. It takes 30 minutes to get your heart rate to a state where you are burning fat more productively. So ideally you should be doing cardio 45 minutes to a hour. Also, you do not want to over exert your muscles either as this can lead to other sorts of damage.
Second is your diet. Do not do a starvation diet or any of those fad diets. Your body will simply store every morsel of food it gets. Instead, switch to skim milk if you drink whole. Eat whole grain bread instead of white and limit yourself to a slice or two a day. Eat lots of vegetables and things with a higher protein content and less fat and carbs.
Finally, moral support, let a friend or a family member know of your goals. This will allow you to have a mental support if you are about to eat that huge slice of chocolate cake! Think of a future goal, is there a reunion or a party you would love to look fabulous at? A dress you would dream of wearing? A celebrity whose physique you admire? All are things that will help motivate you!
GOOD LUCK!

I actually started a weight loss program last week. I am reading a lot of diet magazines for ideas, but not taking them seriously yet. You should try to find a method that you are comfortable with. I started out with 45 min of cardio 5 times a week but eating right is a factor too. try writing down everything you eat on a note pad. to see what you can cut out of your current intake of food and drink.

Eat nourishing food with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables being part of it. Chew each morsel at least 32 times. This will activate signal to the brain as soon as u have had enough. Besides this change in eating style, take regular light exercises and brisk walks every day. U will be able to gain/shed all extra weight gracefully and in a reasonable time span.

Whatever it is, don't do one of those one that boast of being fast. The body is a slow machine. If you try to loose weight fast, your body usually looses weight slower anyway. If you skip breakfast, your body will go into conservative mode and will loose weight slower. Hope it goes well.
